Arab Civil Society Groups
Empower Arab advocates through social media training to build civil society in their countries.
Members of the Turner team travelled to Istanbul in 2009 to train 30 civil society organizers from nearly every Arab nation in social media techniques for building and managing constituents. Advocates learned how to enhance the work they had been doing with Facebook, and to incorporate Twitter into their outreach efforts to raise awareness with the international media.
While Turner can not claim credit for launching the Arab Spring, the wave of protests that swept across North Africa and the Middle East starting in 2009, the Facebook and Twitter techniques taught in Istanbul were a major factor in raising awareness about the situation, despite government efforts to block all access to the activities of protestors, some of whom participated in the Turner trainings.
